Raccoons Roaming the Neighborhood!
Posted on Mar 24th, 2015
Several raccoons have recently been spotted making their rounds throughout the neighborhood, at all hours of the day. There is also a new family of eagles just to the northwest of us. This is not at all surprising, considering that coyotes, bobcats, and even bear, have been sighted at one time or another throughout Forest Estates, and they all find our small pets, and their food, very attractive. Unfortunately, this is one of the realities of living where we have all chosen to live,...on the edge of the forest, where we share their habitat with them.
But we must be smart about it!
1. DO NOT LEAVE PET FOOD OUTSIDE
This is only an invitation to raccoons to your yard. Several of you mentioned how you have seen raccoons eating out of the food bowl that a homeowner had left outside for their pet. If you don't want wild animals eating your pet, don't leave food outside to draw them to your house.
2. RACCOONS CAN CARRY DISEASES THAT ARE HARMFUL TO PETS AND HUMANS
They can carry rabies and feline leukemia that can spread to our pets. Sick raccoons can be aggressive and a danger to children. Do not approach them, and do all possible to keep your pet out of harm's way, which may include keeping your pet inside, or at least, within view.
Bottom line: As long as we choose to live where we do, we will have to learn to live with the potential for wildlife invading our lives and properties. Let's do what we can to enjoy it, and do it wisely.
